ABOUT


Uhuru Dancers, Inc. is a traditional African dance company. The name means freedom in Kiswahili. Uhuru is a community based non-profit organization that has been empowering the Atlanta area through African Culture since 1989. The company was established with the purpose to uphold a strong legacy of African culture through dance, rhythm, song, & folklore. Uhuru Dancers was founded by Toni Young, Shaheedah Enahora, Tina Scoop, & Celeste Anthony. It is the oldest professional African dance company in the Metro Atlanta Area. At least 100 members have passed through the ranks of Uhuru in its many years of operation. Uhuru currently offers a wide variety of workshops, community events, & performances through out the year. The group is also dedicated to teaching the youth through Watoto Uhuru, the Children of Freedom. Watoto is comprised of boys & girls ages 3-18 & directed by Toni Young.

When the company was started, Uhuru Members organized a weekly African Dance Workshop. The class is now the longest running African Dance class in the Metro Atlanta area, attracting patrons from all around the world. Come & experience African culture in motion! Uhuru's workshop is open to children and adults. Beginner, Intermediate, & Advance Dancers are welcomed.
